This page explains two things: what we know about you as a visitor, and how we handle information about the people who appear on the map.
Visitors
Benmer has no user accounts and shows no advertising.
We count page visits with our hosting provider's analytics service. It uses no cookies, is not used for advertising, does not track you across other sites, and does not store your IP address. The part of a page's address after the question mark is removed before it is sent. We install no other third-party trackers.
When a search on the map finds nothing, your browser sends us the words you searched for, so we know what readers look for that the map does not have yet. The words are cleaned first: a search containing numbers, an email address or a link is not sent. We store them with a code that changes every day instead of your IP address. Editors only see a search once it has been made at least three times in 30 days, and on one of those days from more than one internet connection. The daily codes are deleted after two days, and the search counts after 90 days. For a search that finds nothing, our server also sends the name you typed, and nothing else about you, to Wikidata (the Wikimedia Foundation's open database) to check whether it names a person or organisation from outside Indonesia. When you pick an entry from the search results, the analytics service above records the entry you picked together with the search words, cleaned the same way, without your IP address. We only see these as counts, not per visitor.
The hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and the time of requests, for security and reliability.
If a page fails to display, your browser sends us an error report containing only that page's address (without the part after the question mark), its technical error message and a daily encoded code to limit the number of reports, with nothing else from your visit.
Correction reports
If you send a report through the form on the Corrections page, we store the entry you name, the content of your report, and your email address if you give one. Email is optional and is used only to reply to that report. We never show it.
If a search on the map finds nothing and you press Suggest, we store the name you searched for, and the news link if you give one, as a suggested entry. For a name that Wikidata places outside Indonesia, we also store the Indonesian entry you linked it to and what Wikidata says about the name. It is stored, limited and deleted in the same way as a correction report.
The form does not store your IP address, only an encoded code that changes every day. That code is used solely to limit reports to at most five a day from one address.
Reports can be read only by the editorial team. A report and its email address are deleted 365 days after the report has been dealt with.
People who appear on the map
The map holds information about named people, taken from published sources, including reports of court proceedings. That information is published for reference and research in the public interest.
We do not include specific personal data as defined by Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection, such as health data, except as reported in court proceedings and relevant to the case. We do not include ordinary citizens who have only commented on social media.
If the map holds information about you, you can ask for a copy of the data we keep, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be removed through the corrections process.
